Details

Discover the charming historical centre of Dijon and relive the saga of the Great Dukes and their patronage : the masterpieces of the Fine-Arts Museum and the Charterhouse of Champmol, not forgetting the former abbey (now cathedral) of Saint-Bénigne and its Romanesque crypt.

9:00 Our guide will lead you into the heart of Dijon, which covers a 97-hectares Conservation Area, from the Palace of the Dukes and the States of Burgundy to the Parliament district, via the area around Notre Dame and through the medieval streets, you are sure to appreciate the wealth and elegance of the city’s architectural heritage …
10:30 The Great Dukes of the Occident – In the Middle Ages, the Dukes of Burgundy influenced the course of European history. There are many reminders of these colourful characters in Dijon. We visit (among other things) the Historical Rooms of the Fine Arts Museum** (Musée des Beaux Arts) – the Guards Room (Salle des Gardes), the Tombs of the Dukes (Tombeaux des Ducs) and more (*subject to the rooms being open to visitors).
12:00 Lunch in the centre of Dijon.
14:00 The former Saint Bénigne Abbey – A superb example of monasticism and the influence of Cluny in the Middle Ages, St Bénigne (nowadays a cathedral) contains an eleventh century rotunda - crypt. We also visit the eleventh and the thirteenth century rooms – gems of Romanesque and Gothic Architecture - at the Archaeological Museum.
15:30 The Charterhouse of Champmol – Only two majors works by Claus Sluter have survived, but they both feature in all textbooks on the history of medieval art: the Well of Moses, recently restored and opened to the public, and the great door of the former chapel with its wonderful sculptures (forecast to go there into bus).
17:00 End of the tour and the guide’s services.
